This weekend's annual yoga retreat was greeted by celestial showers of meteors. I believe it was the tail end of the Taurids, or perhaps the start of the Leonids, or maybe a bit of both, as the meteors seemed to be streaking across both the Southern and Eastern sky. In any case, the new moon assisted with great viewing from the fire pit of the Christine Center. With a circle of friends around the fire, each meteor was greeted with an "ooh!" from one side of the circle and an "aww!" from the other side as those who had their backs to it realized what they missed. But everyone was treated to a low big dipper hanging over the Center and Orion hiking up from the horizon as if to take a walk across the Milky Way. I am so grateful for places where we can still view the mostly unobscured night sky. I thank the Christine Center for creating minimal light and sound pollution and allowing nature to take center stage.

I chose this photo from a collection on my computer, and it seemed a perfect complement to the weekend's star show.

I created this circular collage earlier this year. When I'm not sure what step to take next in a project, I will hover my hand over this disc, holding my pendulum, and let my inner guide tell me what I should do. I love having this choice of verbs, reminding me that in order to get where want to go, we must take some sort of action. The Sanskrit word, karma, means action. Perhaps I should call this my Karma Chakra (action wheel). I imagine us all in the center of this disc, hurtling through space, but always leaning toward one action or another. What does today call for? Do you choose for yourself, or let outside forces guide you?

I've been thinking of this Rumi poem this week:

Keep walking, though there's no place to get to.
Don't try to see through the distances.
That's not for human beings. Move within,
but don't move the way fear makes you move.

It's a good reminder in times like these, which I'm sure is not that all that different from the time of Rumi, or any other time.

Don't move the way fear makes you move.

Namaste,

Today in the news I read that Pantone's color of 2015 is Marsala-- a deep brownish red. This color makes me think of the feelings of grounding, stability, Earthiness.

Think of the word Earth. What a strange word. The more you look at it, the stranger it seems. It looks like it should be hard to pronounce, but we use it every day without effort. The word Earthy is interesting to consider. We are so inextricably linked to our home planet, that the idea of being on any other sphere in the cosmos (even if it were just as lush and soil-filled as this one) does not have the connotation of stability, the feeling of being home and rooted.

I invite you to celebrate the ways you connect with your home planet, the elements that made you, during this season of gratitude and generosity. Consider the ways that the Earth has been generous to you, and consider how you can return the favor.

What rituals are part of your routine, or would you like to add to your life, that bring you in close contact with your home planet?

The movie The Grounded shows how the residents of one town in Alaska used the power of the soil, the Earth, to heal various illnesses. Looking for healing in your life? Maybe we just need to pay closer attention to something as simple and obvious as the dirt beneath our feet.

Grounding is an important part of a yoga practice as well. During my weekend training at Mind Body Solutions with Matthew Sanford, I learned about the importance of giving a sense of grounding to all students, especially those in wheelchairs, whose feet rarely touch the Earth.

We can impart a greater sense of grounding to those whose feet do provide support. Try using your hands to help ground the feet of someone standing in tadasana, or warrior I. They will feel the extra support and energy moving up through the legs and beyond. Or sit facing each other, feet touching in dandasana, and experience the feeling of support coming from another soul (sole).

Eventually we all return to the Earth from which we were created, and this fact brings home the realization that we were never really separate to begin with.

We are the Earth. The Earth is us.

Namaste and happy holidays!
Sure, you have to stay up later and wait for the stars to reveal themselves, but it's warm and inviting out there, and maybe you are lucky enough to have a dock to lie on, or a nice big grassy field.

One of the things on my summer list this year is "watch a meteor shower". We just had one with the Leonids in early August, but it was rainy and overcast where I am, so I didn't get a chance to look for any shooting stars.

I remember one night camping with my mom, years ago, and she told me that I couldn't go to bed until we saw a shooting star. Yes, I do have the most amazing mom in the world. And yes, we did see one or two that night.

One of the books I'm reading right now is The End of Night by Paul Bogard. He grew up in Minnesota, and still has a cabin on a lake somewhere up here. Having the stars so close it seems like you can touch them is something that stays with you even as you grow up and move to the bright lights of city nights.

I try to get outside the ring of light that seems to grow wider every year, and experience the joy of standing under the Milky Way. It's really the only way to see where are in the universe, and maybe where we are going.

Check out:
The End of Night on Amazon

And think about where it was that you had your first or best glimpse of the amazing garland of light that surrounds our world from millions of miles away.

While you're at it, check out this documentary as well, featuring Neil DeGrasse Tyson:
The City Dark

Maybe it will bug you to know how much you're missing every night, or maybe it will inspire you to become evangelical about preventing light pollution.
Sometimes change happens so slowly you don't even know it's going on until you find yourself looking out over a new vista and wondering, in the words of David Byrne, "how did I get here?"

This is not one of those times.

This is one of those major shifts that cannot be overlooked. In the space of one week I have been released from ownership of a house in Minneapolis, I have taught my last class at Hiawatha Yoga in Minneapolis (it's been a good run!) and I am turning another year older.

It truly does feel like starting a new chapter. This is an unusual feeling for me, since as I mentioned in my last post, change is not something I am very adept at accepting and embracing. But this time it all feels good-- a testament to my intention earlier this year?

Our intentions are everything. I am mostly a go-with-the-flow type of person, but it's important to realize that we must set our own direction before we can go. Otherwise, whose flow are we going with?

It's a beautiful, well-earned, worth-waiting-for spring. The lilacs, lilies of the valley, crab apples, phlox, irises, even tulips are all blooming at once, as if they just couldn't hold back any longer. Springing forth with uncontained exuberance. That's how I feel, too.

Hiawatha Yoga has been a generous, warm, nurturing home to my yoga classes for exactly 3 years. I feel like I've completed a cycle there, and I am eternally grateful to Sue R. for giving me the opportunity to create my own thing in that beautiful space. I know that it will continue to flourish and bring needed restoration to the wonderful folks in South Mpls.

The house letting-go was a long time coming. Because of the extended time frame between deciding to move out and releasing my financial ties, I had already gone through all the stages of grief and was more than prepared to walk away happy.

This birthday welcomes the new, the exciting and unexpected. In a recent meditation, I envisioned myself as a massive, clear, empty crystal bowl.

Part of this process of change, I'm sure, has been midwifed by my consistent daily yoga practice, which started in earnest on April 21. (Yes, even yoga teachers have resistance to what we know is good for us.) I stopped making excuses and started a practice of getting on the mat every day, for the same practice, no matter what.

It works.

Part of my success in making it happen every day is the fact that I have a regular, simple asana sequence that I don't have to think about. It is therapeutic (for sacrum, which is my trouble spot), so it's never a strain on my body, even if something is feeling weak or inflamed, and it takes about 20-30 minutes to complete, so the time commitment is not intimidating. If I only have 15 minutes, I do it anyway, and just get as far as I can into my sequence before continuing on with my day. The important thing is to do it. Every day. No matter what.

The best part of the daily practice is the palpable transition from monkey mind or physical tension to meditative calm and release. As an added bonus, the savasana portion ensures a daily meditation practice as well.

I look forward to what the new season brings. I hope we can all embrace change with grace and sense of wonder. May you find what you need on your yoga mat and beyond.

Namaste,
Kate

Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08237786863155100066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4298865903109547872.post-45962806936347321822014-03-31T13:33:00.000-07:002014-03-31T13:33:31.178-07:00Change IsAre you someone who thrives on change? Or do you prefer to find a comfort zone and hang out in that cozy nest until something pushes you out?

Maybe it's different depending on the situation.

I am someone who finds a configuration for my furniture and leaves it there until some very good reason prompts me to move things around. Too much change can be exhausting for me.

But I recognize the importance of it. If we didn't change, we'd be dead. Well, even when we die, our bodies continue to change, so even that is not a static state.

So in an effort to prevent stagnation in my life. I am not only thinking of ways to embrace change/transition/transformation, but even going so far as to consider ways in which I can initiate or provoke it.

In yoga there is this idea of "tamas" that can be associated with stagnation, lethargy, dullness. Are there areas in your life where you're feeling tamasic? Where can you initiate "rajas" or energy, movement, dynamism?

Right now I can think of a couple areas. Physical exercise is an area where I find it easy to fall into a tamasic state if I'm not careful. There is also mental exercise. I haven't felt challenged in a way that makes me feel like I'm growing intellectually. So, this spring, my effort will be toward initiating change in both those areas. I'm going to push myself out of my nest before something else does it for me.

Watch me fly!

Namaste,
KateUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4298865903109547872.post-77688299792878748552014-03-02T16:26:00.000-08:002014-03-02T16:26:00.384-08:00Adventures In Mala LandI've had great fun buying beads and creating dozens of unique malas this winter. Even though skiing has been my priority, there are always recovery days, or just times when it's too darn cold to drag myself out to the ski trail. That's when I set up my station on the coffee table, pop open my laptop for some visual inspiration, and tune Songza to a dreamy, wintry mix. I've expanded the skull line, since that seems to be pretty popular. I don't know if people really love Kali or just love skulls, but I'm here to respond to the desire for memento mori meditation tools. Also new to the shop are pendulums and pendulum/bracelets. Who doesn't sometimes want an oracle on the go?

This late winter season was supposed to be filled with more yoga training, but since the class was cancelled, I am going to have to find alternatives to keep me inspired. Next week I will be taking Stephanie's Aerial Yoga workshop at Hiawatha Yoga. It should make me aware of some new muscles and definitely train my brain to see things from another perspective.

My word this year is "evolution" and lately, I've been pondering how I can continue to evolve and keep my world from stagnating. Change is inevitable, so we may as well embrace it and choose the direction we want to go. I look forward to grabbing some new opportunities this year, and busting through some fears along the way.

Happy Winter!
It has taught me what to caution in yoga classes, when leading students into poses that could go "too far". It has also, perhaps even more importantly, taught me compassion in dealing with people everyday who are moving slowly, or are crabby or just not acting the way I want them to. When I am in pain, I am not myself, and I am hyper aware of how others are treating me. This is a great lesson for when I'm feeling good and I see someone else who is in that place. So I have learned to appreciate the times when I'm forced to slow down, or rely on the compassion of others. I think it makes me a better human.
Continuing my study of mantra, I've been using this one lately:
Om Dum Durgayay Namaha

Durga is the divine mother and protector.

I find that when I do the Durga mantra, I feel more grounded and compassionate. Interesting to notice what qualities come out during mantra practice invoking different divine feminine deities.

During meditation using the Durga mantra, I was given the following exercise:
Inhale as though through the crown, exhale as though through roots growing down into the Earth.

I found this to be a very useful tool in getting myself back down to earth, as I tend to live "in my head" most of the time.

Thanks, Durga!
Notice how in some classes, the music can annoy and distract you from your practice, and in others, it creates a transcendent experience? Different sounds create vibrations in your body, and since our bodies are just vibration to begin with, it makes sense that some vibrations from the outside will feel good and others will make us crazy.

There are a few artists whose music seems to be universally enjoyed in yoga classes (in my experience) and those include Deva Premal, Anugama, and Baird Hersey. Try them out for yourself and see what you feel.

Maha means "great" and also "heart center"
Ganaphathi is a name for the deity Ganesha

{As a side note, Ganesha is depicted on a rat mount. Ganesha represents cosmic consciousness and the rat represents the ego. This reminds us that the tiny ego is in service to the infinite and vast cosmic consciousness.}

Traditionally, in order to learn mantras, a student would learn them a little at a time, repeating one section many times until that was memorized and then adding on.

This is called a step mantra. in which one would repeat each section 3-108 times, adding a little more to each section, until finally the entire mantra is memorized.

Here is what it looks like:

om swaha
om srim swaha
om srim hrim swaha
om srim hrim klim swaha
om srim hrim klim glaum swaha
om srim hrim klim glaum gam swaha
om srim hrim klim glaum gam ganapatayei swaha
om srim hrim klim glaum gam ganapatayei vara varada swaha
om srim hrim klim glaum gam ganapatayei vara varada sarva janam me vasham swaha

According to Thomas Ashley-Farrand, (from whose book this information was gleaned) this mantra is an entreaty to Ganesha to help us in centering tangible spiritual power on a foundation of heartfelt impulse.

If you need a mala to help you keep track of how many times you've chanted the sections of this mantra, may I suggest something from my Etsy shop ;)
I've just listened to a 5 1/2 hour Ayurveda program (my how time flies while driving to and from work), and thought I'd share a little something from the booklet that accompanied the CD's (courtesy of Dr. Vasant Lad.)

Here is the recommended routine for a creative and healthy life:

Awaken before sunrise
Evacuate bowels and bladder after awakening
Bathe every day
Eat breakfast before 8 a.m.
Take a short walk 15 min. after meals
Eat slowly and in silence with awareness of food
Each day, massage the gums with sesame oil on finger
Fast one day a week
Sleep before 10 p.m.

Hmm, I have a lot of room for improvement. I think I did one of these things today. Anyway, it's a good reminder to take care of ourselves first before the rest of the world's demands take over.

And one more tip from Dr. Lad: Worry weakens the heart.
It's great because not only does he give proper pronunciation, but he repeats the mantras over and over, and in a few instances, he repeats them for several minutes so that you can eventually chant along with him without having to rewind, rewind, rewind.

One of the methods he mentions in the program is the repetition of a certain mantra for 40 days straight. He cites 40 days as a somewhat magical number, since it's the amount of time Jesus went into the desert, and the Buddha sat under the bodhi tree. 40 days will cement the mantra into your consciousness and results will start to appear before or around that time.

I chose the Lakshmi mantra: Om Shreem Kleem Maha Lakshmiay Swaha.

(According to Mr. Ferrand, mantras end in swaha or namaha, which means salutations. Those under the age of 28 use namaha, and those over 28 should use swaha.)

Lakshmi, being the goddess of beauty and abundance, bestows prosperity. It seemed like a good one to start the year with, so on the winter solstice I began using the Lakshmi mantra during my mala meditation, as well as repeating it to myself whenever I thought of it. The idea is to keep it going in one's mind as often as possible.

I find that if I repeat the mantra to myself during my cross-country ski training, it helps me keep the rhythm of skiing, while training my mind at the same time.

I recall during a Rod Stryker workshop, when he was teaching us about the use of mantra, he talked about how at some point the mantra no longer happens in linear time, but in a way, you recite it all at once in your head when you think of it. Try as I may, I was unable to get to that point with the mantra he taught us in that training. However, today while skiing, after repeating the Laskhmi mantra for 25 days straight, I noticed that it was happening; not only was I no longer consciously reciting the mantra, but it seemed to be existing in my brain as one whole thing rather than a linear recitation. This is something that is difficult to properly describe, I know, but now that I've experienced it, I have a new found interest in continuing my mantra practice.

Try it for yourself. Pick a mantra that appeals to you, or that represents something you want to invite into your life. Use it for 40 days, think of it whenever you can, and see what happens.

On the first day of my mantra practice, I made a $400 sale of something I didn't even try to sell. You never know how things may manifest.
It was an especially creative and fun group and I enjoyed getting to know everyone. Thank you also to my fellow yoga instructors who helped make it all come together. Angela, Kirsten and Jody, you were amazing and I am so lucky to have had your excellent assistance and expertise. And as always, thanks to the Christine Center for allowing me to have this gathering. It is indeed a healing place.

I think it was an especially wonderful retreat this year, and I'm still basking in the good feelings generated by our group. I hope all who attended had as great a time as I did. You all make the retreat happen.

I was informed today that there are actually no October weekends available for us to meet at the Center next year. So my choices are either the weekends around Sept. 15 or Nov. 15. I am reaching out to you who want to attend next year, to help me decide which of these is the better option. I need to get a final date to the Center by next week.

To all who were wondering about the "waves" music I played during savasana, that is Relaxation Ocean by Anugama.

The place where I buy my beads for malas (online) is Fire Mountain.

I made a few more malas tonight and put them up on Etsy. I'm so happy that the ones I brought to the retreat all went out to good homes!

Matt was a wise and patient teacher to the 30 people who attended the training from many corners of the country. The adaptive yoga students we met were generous and gracious in their willingness to be attended to by multiple newbie adaptive teachers (usually several at once). The main message here was "we want you to take this out into the world" and everyone at MBS made us feel welcome, capable and knowledgeable, even when we were questioning our ability to teach yoga at all, much less to a population with limited mobility.

I subbed a beginner Hatha class at the Yoga Center on Monday night, and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Matthew Sanford for bringing me back to the basics of yoga and giving me the tools to teach the class I wanted to teach. I used many of the adjustments we learned over the weekend, and was able to better verbalize the effect the poses were intended to create.

Thank you to Matt, Sue, and all of the MBS teachers AND students who shared their time, knowledge, patience and compassion.

<span style="color: #741b47; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The word "economy" can be traced back to the Greek oikos meaning "house" or "household" and refers to the intimate management of our daily lives, which can neither be separated from our environment nor our most authentic sense of what is real. We can point to global systems of exchange; we can look at inequities, injustices, and the unbelievable irresponsibility of entire nations chronic debt. Ultimately, however, it is our own households and our ongoing energies of exchange that have become deeply imbalanced and off center.

I'll be making an appearance at the Yoga Center of Minneapolis tonight and next Monday evening. I'm going to be subbing a Hatha Yoga intro. class. All are welcome to attend. I've missed the Yoga Center since I've had a regular class there, and it will be nice to get back in the fold for a couple classes. If you haven't been to their beautiful downtown Minneapolis studio, I encourage you to make the trip, either for these classes or another time. There is something wonderfully calming about watching the hubub of activity outside the big semicircular windows as we unwind from the day.
Fall is a wonderful time for re-creating ourselves or committing to something we've been wanting to experience. I am attending a weekend conference on environmental and nature writing at the end of this month. I am hoping it will kick-start my writing season and perhaps inspire me to move into a new genre.
I feel like some time around other yoga instructors will also be inspirational and energizing and I hope to take away some things that I can use in all of my yoga classes.

A Create-Your-Own-Mala class is in the works for October or November. Check the schedule here for time/place once I get it nailed down.

And in the spirit of falling leaves and transition to Autumn, here is my latest mala creation. I call it Memento Mori Mala.
Since my yoga retreat will have to be self-sustaining and will not have the support of a formal religious community, I will have to be creative in getting things built on the cheap. The buildings in this article caught my eye right away for their frugality as well as their folk art aesthetic.
Some cordwood home builders incorporate rocks or glass into the walls. The use of glass bottles allows light through and looks beautiful from inside. I think it would be cool to arrange the glass bottles in the shapes of constellations.

These little round homes with the grass roofs look like they would be the perfect size for retreat cabins.

And as someone who has always been enamored of both stone homes and log cabins, this type of building could assuage the desire for both!

Keep dreaming your own dreams, and as you do, ask yourself, as I did the other day about mine... "am I dreaming big enough?"
It's great fun to get people together to create and share. And after the classes, everyone seems really happy!
I am planning on doing another one in September at Hiawatha Yoga. I'll post a date when I know when it will be. In the mean time, take a look at some of the ones I've made that are available on Etsy (see the sidebar on the right.) Here's my Buddha wearing all of my malas at once. See how contented he is?
